Not everyone can afford private or even group tuition and most of the less privileged families often struggle to provide their children with much-needed help in their studies. In view of this apparent need, Loving Heart launched the Free Tuition programme in 2005.
Initially catering to less privileged primary school students, the programme expanded in 2011 to include lower secondary students in need of assistance with their school work and revision. Held every Saturday (excluding Public Holidays and end-of-the-year School Holidays) from 10am to 12pm at Block 312 and Block 316 Jurong East Street 32, students registered for the Free Tuition programme can expect help from a team of dedicated volunteer tutors.
These volunteers, whom the Free Tuition students often view as big brothers or sisters, take time out from their busy work and study schedule every Saturday morning to help the students battle it out against confusing problem sums and tricky grammar questions.
Students are split into smaller groups to facilitate effective learning and monitoring of the students' progress and performance. The student-tutor ratio is generally 3 students to every 1 tutor. Students usually bring their unfinished homework or assessment books to the tuition session where they consult the tutors on questions beyond their grasp or understanding.
Free Tuition is not all about studying. During vacation, Loving Heart along with the volunteers and kind-hearted sponsors, organise outings with the objective of enriching their experience and outlook.
In 2016, due to the increase in number of students, Saturday classes are full and Loving Heart had commenced Friday classes from 7:00pm-9:00pm.
Loving Heart Free Tuition Programme for Friday 7pm-9pm class and Saturday 11am – 1pm class is now open for registration.
